I assume that if you’re at the “About” page of my site you’re a little confused about what is going on over in this corner of the internet.
Ok, so hi, I’m Ashley.
I’m the Accidental Olympian. Which made a WHOLE lot more sense back when you know, I lived in Olympia, WA. It made less sense when I lived in Anchorage, AK and even LESS sense when we moved to Chicago.
This blog came to be because once upon a time I walked into my bosses office a 23 year old college graduate working in book publishing, and a half hour later I walked out, “unemployed.”
Being laid off, relocating to the much smaller town of Olympia, WA after being unable to find work in Seattle (get why I’m an “accidental Olympian” yet?), starting over, and taking 6 months to find a job basically took my self esteem and put it through a meat grinder. Twice.
I spent my first two years on the internet being oh-so frank about my struggles, both with finding work and how the painful journey to find both economically and emotionally fulfilling employment destroyed my self worth. I talked openly and honestly about my eventual decision to seek therapy as a way to cope with my crippling anxiety post lay-off, and then I droned on about my decision to go on antidepressants. IT WAS FUN TIMES ALL OVER THIS PLACE!
After two years of all that fun, things started to get a little too stagnant so Adam and I decided to move to Alaska.
Ok, that’s a lie, we moved for Adam’s big job promotion and I worked from home so my job let me keep doing what I loved from far away, but wouldn’t it make me sound way more badass if you thought we did this on some adventurous whim?
THEN, as if all the nonsense we got to experience in Alaska wasn’t enough adventure, two years after moving to Alaska we up and moved to Chicagoland. Then we got married in Bend, OR in the most country DIY backyard wedding ever (if I do say so myself) and if you’re into that kind of thing I’ve got posts and post for you to dive into.
And because I’ve clearly been doing this for too long, the latest change in the o’l Accidental Olympian casa is that in the spring of 2015 we found out we were expecting our first child! After 6+ years of blogging about our various relocations and my generally boring life, in January 2016 I guess I’ll be moving into the category of “mommy blogger“.
So that’s where we are now folks. Stay tuned as I eat my way through Chicago, document my first pregnancy, and eventually do this whole parenting thing! Thanks for stopping by.
