At the University Lake dog park one finds a little over a mile of trails, surrounding a lake that sits right in the middle of Anchorage. Dogs romp and run freely as their owners meander the trails. There are spots for swimming, sticks for chasing, and benches for resting and enjoying the view. Three full loops around the lake ensure that both owner and dog will be heavily exercised, and heavily relaxed.
It's the only place I can go in the summer around Anchorage where I feel safe from wildlife encounters yet also feel as if I'm in the middle of the woods. And after a summer like we've had in Alaska, enjoying the wilderness without fearing animals is a delightful and wondrous feeling.
Basically, it's heaven on earth for both dogs and humans.
