So remember the other week when I declared I was over being flabby and out of shape, blaming my knee, and was committed to getting back on the fitness wagon? Well by golly I’ve done it!
Ok, one week worth, but whatever. One small step at a time, right?
As I mentioned last week, one of the things I was going to do was get myself a fancy pedometer. I originally bought the Fitbit Flex, and then wouldn’t you know it, my friend Naomi was like, “Um, I have an extra Jawbone UP (long story!) if you want it for free.” Why yes I DO want one for free. So the Fitbit was returned, and I began my journey with the Jawbone UP. It’s been a week wearing this fancy little step and sleep counter, and here are my thoughts on the pros of this technology.
- Who Knew I Took So Many Steps! – The first realization after wearing this thing for a week is that even with my sitonmyassalldayofficejob I magically walk about an average of 8,000 steps in a day. Pat on the back for me! Now that I have this handy little counting machine on my wrist though, I find myself talking the long way to the water machine, trying to take a break and walk the little loop outside around the office in the afternoon, park the car further from the front of the store, and take the dogs on more walks. Without making a big effort like a dog walk it’s impossible for me to hit the recommended 10,000 a day, but I like knowing that a simple activity like a walk in the neighborhood will give me the boost I need to hit 10,000. Plus, can you imagine the kind of steps you might track if you follow a toddler around all day? Or go to the zoo? Or play basketball? Of golf? Or, or, or… You see how it can get?
- Come On Kids, Count Your Steps, It’s Fun! – When I first got my UP it was the weekend I went to Seattle with my girl friends, and Naomi, also a new UP Jawbone user and I were unstoppable. Comparing our walks, our day, our sleep, compare compare compare. Constantly syncing, constantly checking, How many steps was it to load the car? How many steps if I walk to the water’s edge and back? Does drinking all this wine make me sleep like a dead person? How many steps was that dance party? Our other two friends might have started to give us a wee bit of crap for all the Jawbone this and Jawbone that we were rattling on about. I imagine that our obsessive nature with syncing and checking and, Let’s go on another walk! will fade naturally with time.
- Sleep Tracking Is Insanity – At first I was thinking I’d never track my sleep with my fitness bracelet, no matter which company I went with. Then I tracked my first night’s sleep and I was hooked. It’s so interesting to see how long it took to fall asleep, how long your deep sleep is, where in the night you’re more in deep sleep or light sleep, and then to look at how your day feels differently based on how you slept the night before. I haven’t been using it long enough to really get a strong correlation, but even in the short term I see how much more light sleep I get when I have wine, or the extra deep sleep I get on days I worked out. I may stop using the sleep feature at some point, but for now I’m intrigued.
- I’ve Never Been So Aware Of Walking – Maybe you already knew this, but you guys, do you realize how much you walk? I never thought about how many steps are involved in packing a car, or grocery shopping, or cleaning the house, or cooking, or basically EVERYTHING other than sitting at my desk or sitting watching tv. I know this is the lamest realization in probably ever, but still, it’s been amazing to see how many things in my daily life really add up to great step activity, and looking for places in the rest of my day to increase the step count and get away from immobility.
- Automatic Syncing with LoseIt and RunKeeper Is Heaven – Having all these apps I use automatically talk to one another is genius. No more estimations and guessing and thinking if my walk is this many calories in RunKeeper does that corrilate to how many minutes per hour of a walk in LoseIt? Now I add something in one and all three know what’s happening. Sure, I feel partially bionic, but I also feel incredibly active and finally on top of something that once felt so momentous I couldn’t get in control. I'm back to tracking my exercise, tracking my food, and the way they all sync together encourages me to make smart choices and move more. So, basically a win win.
So there we are. After a week of wearing a magical step counter, these are the things I'm really enjoying about it.
